    TIPS FOR MAKING SEAFOOD DIP:

    • For the lump crab meat, you can purchase it canned (next to the tuna in the grocery store), or for a fresher version, the crab meat in the fresh fish section is really good.

    • If you've never purchased cocktail sauce before, you can usually find it in the same grocery aisle as ketchup and barbecue sauce. The cocktail sauce is a must and adds just the right tangy goodness to the crab and shrimp.
    • To store: cover well with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days (or store in an airtight container).
    • An alternative way to serve this crab dip would be to cut a baguette into thick slices, spread with dip and place a 375° oven for 5 minutes until the edges of the bread are toasted and the dip is melty and bubbly. Serve warm.

FAQ

What can I substitute for cream cheese?

If cream cheese is scarce in your neck of the woods, I have used greek yogurt and it was just as tasty.  Other recipes have listed mayonnaise or sour cream as subs too.

What can I substitute for the Crab?

I have made this with little mini shrimp (normally I am not a big seafood fan) and it was divine!

What is imitation crab?

Imitation crab is usually made from white fish.   It’s usually made from something called surimi, or white fish flesh.  It has the bones removed and minced into a paste.  Then it’s combined together with other ingredients including both natural and artificial flavors, starch, sugar, and sodium.

Storage

Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Recipe Notes

  • Imitation crab comes in different varieties, such as flake style, leg, or stick. Any style works for this imitation crab dip since you are chopping it. You can find it packaged in the seafood section. You could also use . On the other hand, I don’t recommend using in this .
  • I like reduced-fat cream cheese, but regular works too. I used 4 ounces for an extra creamy crab dip.
  • Make sure to choose a sturdy cracker. The light and flakey crackers can break when dipping. You can also use pita chips, tortilla chips, or baguette slices.
  • You can also serve your crab dip with mini peppers, slices, or celery and carrot sticks.
  • Here are some more simple variations to make this easy crab dip your own:
    • Add lime juice instead of lemon juice.
    • Add a cup of green onion or celery to this crab dip.
    • For extra flavor, add lemon zest, 1/4 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, or a pinch of cayenne pepper for some heat.
    • For extra heat, add a tablespoon of hot sauce.
  • To make this into a hot crab dip recipe, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the crab dip into a small oven-safe dish and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Then top with 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese or , turn the oven to broil, and broil until the cheese is golden brown.

Cold Crab Dip - Simply Recipes

Here's an easy crab dip to serve at your next party. Just mix lump crab meat with sour cream, mayo, shallots, and seasonings, and it's ready for the party table.

When it's crab season and our local market gets a shipment, we're first in line for the biggest (more than two pounds) fresh, cooked crabs, already cleaned and broken.

My father calls it "nature's fast food." We've been known to go through a couple 2-pound Dungeness crabs just for lunch!

As with all seafood, the crab's freshness is imperative. I once had to return crab to the market because it just wasn't edible. My bad, I forgot to check.

Although your fish monger should be checking before handing it over to you, you really do need to inspect it before paying for it and taking it home.

The best way to test is to smell. If it smells too strong or fishy, it's not good. Fresh crab should smell like an ocean breeze and lightly sweet.

What to do with leftover crabmeat when your eye is hungrier than your stomach? Mix it into a fresh crab dip, refrigerate it overnight and eat it the next day.

If you are no where near a place that sells good, fresh crab, you can of course use canned crab. Trader Joe's has a good product. That said, truly fresh crab will always be better than canned.

Other ways to use this crab dip? Try mixing with pasta for a lovely crab pasta salad. Yum!

  • Looking for a hot version of this dip? Try this recipe for Hot Crab Dip.

Crab dip is better once it's chilled and had a little time for all the flavors to marry. Let it chill for at least two hours in the fridge, or up to overnight — just cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the dip to an air-tight container.

Do try to use it up quickly though. Crab, like fish, shrimp, and other seafood, does not benefit from time. Best to make it, chill it, and eat it.

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1 cup cooked crabmeat (fresh is best)

  • 2 tablespoons minced shallots, green onions or red onions

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dill, or 1 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill

  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar, or 1 1/2 teaspoons dry white wine

  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper

  1. Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, shallots, dill, lemon zest, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl.

Gently fold in the crabmeat. Salt and pepper to taste.

cold crab dip recipe

When my husband and I lived in the Seattle area, we spent almost every major holiday with my in-laws.  They lived 30 minutes from us while my family lived in Arizona.  It was just assumed that we’d head on down to their house, so we did.

Invariably, my sister-in-law would make this cold crab dip.  She’d have it ready and on the kitchen table with Ritz crackers so everyone could snack on it while the main dinner was made.  I often was glad that we had those snacks because just as invariably, the meal would be ready much later than anticipated.  Starving, we would stand around the table gorging ourselves on crackers and crab dip.

For these pics, I needed to make a gluten free dip.  Imitation crab is NOT.  So I opted to commit sacrilege and used canned crab.  Wowza!!  It was so much better that way!  I won’t miss the imitation stuff at all.  So you, my friends, have a choice.  Real or fake this is some good dip.  I ate mine with corn chips.  Some of my family prefers pretzels.  Any way you spread it, though, you will love it.

Simple is always best when entertaining, so you're going to want to hold onto this recipe because I guarantee that it will come in handy VERY soon!

Why This Recipe Works:

  • This crab dip is just one of those great easy appetizers that's appropriate year-round -- hot or cold -- and it disappears in a flash.
  • You can prep the dip in advance and just pull it out when your guests arrive.
  • It's quick to stir together, and it's absolutely perfect with a glass of wine, a cold beer, or a fancy champagne cocktail on New Year's Eve!

HOW TO MAKE CRAB DIP COLD:

As I mentioned above, Mom's best crab dip recipe can be served hot or cold! Let's start with the cold dish, and I'll give you directions for heating it up in just a minute...

In addition to the high-quality jumbo lump crab meat (or claw meat, if necessary), the base of this crab dip starts with cream cheese. Don't all good dips start with cream cheese?!

Ingredients for hot or cold crab dip recipe

For the cold crab dip, it's really just a two-step process. First, use an electric mixer to blend together cream cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, onion, garlic powder, and salt.

Glass bowl with crab dip ingredients and an electric mixer

Then just fold in the parsley and the crab meat. Cover and refrigerate the dip until your guests arrive!

HOW TO MAKE CRAB DIP HOT:

If you want to serve a hot crab dip for a cozy snack on a chilly day, transfer the dip to an oven-safe dish and bake at 350 degrees F until bubbly and heated through (about 15-20 minutes).

Copper bowl of crab dip garnished with fresh parsley

How long is crab dip good for in the refrigerator?

Properly stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, your crab dip will stay fresh for about 3-5 days. After that, I'd toss it!

COOK'S TIPS:

  • Make sure that your cream cheese is at room temperature before you try to prepare this easy crab dip recipe. This will ensure that all of your ingredients blend smoothly together.
  • To quickly bring cream cheese to room temperature, you can:
    • Remove cream cheese from packaging, cut it into small cubes, and allow the cream cheese to sit out on a plate for 15-20 minutes; OR
    • Remove cream cheese from packaging and place on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave in 10-second increments, flipping the cream cheese over after each 10-minute segment, for a total of about 30 seconds (or until the cream cheese softens). Be careful that you don't completely melt the cream cheese!
  • Use an electric mixer instead of a simple whisk. The electric mixer makes the base of the dip nice and smooth.
  • Use high-quality crab meat. My mom always splurged on jumbo lump crab meat for holidays! Sometimes I'm not able to find the pricey jumbo lump crab meat at my little rural grocery store, though. In that case, the refrigerated claw meat is a good substitute.

This cold crab dip is effortless to prepare and loaded with real crab meat. This easy dip is the perfect party appetizer.

As a food blogger, I am supposed to have some long elaborate story that connects me to this recipe. Bonus points if it mentions the cool sea breeze blowing through my hair. Well, guess what? I don't have any fancy story for you, and I don't even enough hair for any ocean breeze to gently rustle through as I wax nostalgically about childhood summers spent in Nantucket or whatever people wax nostalgically about on a beach.

And you know what else? I also know you didn't come here for a pointless story, you came here to learn about this cold crab dip, so let's get to it!

Cold Crab Dip

How to Make Crab Dip

You don't have to live by the sea to enjoy crab dip made from real crabs. You can find canned lump crab meat in your grocery store that is perfect for makings party dips, near the canned tuna. The flavor of cold crab dip with real crab meat is noticeably better than using imitation crab. However, in a pinch, you can substitute imitation crab if you desire.

Crab dip typically uses a cream cheese base, while some mayo is added in to thin it out. This makes it easier for dipping. Additional ingredients such as lemon, green onion, and seasonings are added for flavor.

Crab Dip with Fresh Crab

You can make this crab dip with fresh crab meat as well if you prefer. To equal 12 ounces of canned crab meat called for in this recipe, you will need 9 ounces of cooked fresh crab. The liquid drained from the canned crab meat accounts for the 3-ounce difference.

Crab dip can be enjoyed hot or cold. If I am making a hot crab dip I typically add cheese to it for all of the melty goodness it provides. However, this crab dip recipe is ideal for serving cold, or at room temperature. Since this is a dairy-based dip, I do not recommend letting it sit out at a party for longer than 4 hours, unless you can keep it chilled. Using an iced serving dish is a perfect way to extend the safety of the dip during longer parties (affiliate link).

If you wish to serve this dip hot, it can be microwaved until heated through.

Cold Crab Dip Variations

My cold crab dip is a fantastic basic recipe that is perfect for adding your own personality to.  Dress it up your way by adding cajun seasonings, Old Bay seasoning, cheese, smoked paprika, or whatever flavor fits your fancy.

What to Serve with Crab Dip

The choices for what to serve with your cold crab dip are only limited by your imagination. Chips and crackers are always safe choices, pita chips, in particular, are fantastic. Otherwise, a toasted baguette can be used to create a more refined appetizer. One of my favorite things for any dip is crispy baked potato skins!

Can I Make Crab Dip in Advance?

Cold crab dip is the perfect appetizer to make in advance because it actually tastes better when the flavors are allowed to meld together in the refrigerator overnight. Can you eat the crab dip right away? Yes, you certainly can, but the flavor will be more one dimensional.

Cold crab dip from above with crackers

Who would think that a cold crab dip with cream cheese would taste THIS good?!

Theres a distinct moment in my childhood where I went from thinking this crab dip with cocktail sauce was disgusting, to knowing that it’s simply amazing.

Just spread some cream cheese on a plate, top with seasoned lump crab meat, and finally pour on some cocktail sauce. I used a homemade cocktail sauce recipe, but you can always use a jarred option to save time.

My family always served this party dip with triscuits, but I opted for some simple mills crackers.

Seafood for Life — We Love Seafood-based Recipes

Our family loves anything crab, but crab cakes are actually one of my husbands favorite foods of all time. Making crab cakes from scratch is not the hardest thing in the world, but making this cold crab dip recipe is even easier. Let’s just say now that I have this creamy cold crab dip recipe, I am making more crab dip than crab cakes these days.

How to Make a Creamy Cold Crab Dip Recipe Without Dairy

Most conventional cold crab dip recipes call for a combination of store-bought mayonnaise plus cream cheese or Parmesan cheese. But because 80% of Americans are lactose intolerant AND we’re not going to promote dairy products, we made this cold crab dip recipe dairy free!

Plus, I am not a big fan of store-bought mayo (you can read why HERE). With the exception of a small bit of organic real cheese that I eat here and there, I avoid dairy. But you definitely don’t need dairy to make a super creamy and delicious crab dip.

cold crab dip recipe

So, Let’s Talk About Mayo and How to Make this Cold Crab Dip Recipe with a Healthier Mayo!

As for the mayo, I don’t buy store-bought. It’s just SO easy to make your own and homemade always tastes world’s better. Homemade is also so much healthier. I make a plant-based Egg Free Mayonnaise Recipe. The recipe takes less than 15 minutes to make.

However, if you just absolutely cannot find the time to make your own mayo, I totally get it. The cleanest store-bought brand I have found is the Mayo by Primal Kitchen. Primal Kitchen does still use eggs and the product is sold not-refrigerated though. As I discuss in more detail HERE, this means the eggs are therefore processed in order to remain shelf-stable, which is not optimal in my opinion.

However, if you do not want to go to the trouble of making your own mayonnaise then Primal Kitchen is your best bet if you are trying to eat clean.

Load Up On Veggies

Of course, as with just about all of my recipes, I couldn’t help but load in some vegetables into the cold crab dip recipe. I added celery, red onion and garlic. Plus fresh parsley and fresh dill. Fresh herbs are robust with flavor and nutrients and really give the cold crab dip recipe more flavor.

Almond Crackers and Cut Veggies Pair Perfectly with this Cold Crab Dip Recipe

Not only do we add vegetables to our cold crab dip recipe, but serving them with veggies is perfect too. However, if you would rather go a little less vegetable-based with this dish, look for Simple Mills Almond Crackers or make your own salty Tortilla Chips using this recipe.

The Simple Mills Almond Crackers only have a few simple, readable ingredients.

  • Nut and Seed Flour Blend (Almonds, Sunflower Seeds, Flax Seeds), Tapioca, Cassava, Organic Sunflower Oil, Sea Salt, Organic Onion, Organic Garlic, Rosemary Extract (For Freshness).

We are so impressed with these crackers and excited that Simple Mills has started to make other brands. You can now find them in your local grocery, but at Thrive Market, they are always about 25% cheaper. Worth the purchase and shipped typically within just a few days.

So, go by yourself some crab meat and enjoy with these tasty, clean delicious crackers.

What to Drink with Your Cold Crab Dip Recipe?

Of course you can’t go wrong with water and lemon or sparkling water, but I know a lot of people only make crab dip as an appetizer when entertaining. And entertaining typically involves offering guests something to drink other than water.

My Favorite Clean-Crafted Wine – Now Available Online!

For years, I have avoided wine because if you don’t know the source, then it’s hard to know what is actually in our wine. Knowing that the FDA does not regulate nearly as much as we wish they would, there are additives, tanins and all kinds of other yuck-stuff. So, I just avoided wine altogether.

But, not anytime.

I love clean-crafted wine made by Scout & Cellar. If you’re not familiar, now is a great time to check it out and pair some clean-crafted wines with your summer appetizers.

This recipe pairs really well with the Epic Pursuit Rose Wine or Dove Hunt Dog Rose. If you try out some of these favorites, be sure to leave a comment below to let other visitors know. We know what we like, but love to know what you like too.

This cold crab dip recipe was actually inspired by one of my favorite moments of our Princess cruise in Alaska. We were in Glacier Bay. It’s a trip to the “Ice Ages.” It’s a national park and completely awe inspiring.

Not only was it visually stunning, you could hear the ice moving… it was such a unique experience, unlike anything else I’ve witnessed. It was mind blowing to be sitting in our room, looking out our balcony and see this natural phenomenon before us.

On this particular morning, I was watching Glacier Bay outside, taking in all the sights and while eating breakfast on our balcony. I had crab for breakfast along with the most delicious smoked salmon and quiche. What an amazing way to start the day.

After returning home, I’ve thought of that quiet moment on our balcony enjoying breakfast several times. I’ll admit, the crab I ate for breakfast has danced around my head quite a bit too. It was very delicious.

With that crab for inspiration, the team here at Spaceships and Laser Beams and I came up with this crab dip recipe.

This crab dip recipe cold procedure is extremely diverse. While it always needs to be initially baked, it can be made with all true crab meat, all imitation crab meat, or as a hybrid (1/2 of each). Also, it can be served hot immediately or served cold, after about 3 hours in the fridge. Surprisingly, the Cranberry Mimosa drink goes well with ...

I’m pretty sure my Oma snipped this creamy dip recipe from a magazine years ago, back when gelatin salads were all the rage. I’m not sure what about this recipe caught her eye, as she wasn’t a big crab fan. However, we’re all glad she introduced us to this amazing dip that’s possibly quite different from anything you’ve had before.

What You Need to Make Cold Crab Dip

  • 1 package plain gelatin – see my notes below
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese
  • Green onions
  • Celery
  • Cooked real crab – see my notes below

What is Gelatin?

Gelatin is a colorless, flavorless, and translucent powder that’s derived from pigs or cows. It is used quite commonly in cooking, especially in baking. It’s a powerful thickener that sets up when chilled.

A few decades ago, gelatin was all the rage. There were all sorts of stunning cold salads and desserts popping up, and with no added flavor, these culinary treats were as tasty as they were impressive.

Gelatin is in Jell-O. It’s what gives Jell-O its wiggly jiggly texture. But don’t worry, this recipe isn’t crab Jell-O (and I’m not sure you could convince me to make crab Jell-O!!!). In this recipe, the gelatin is used to give the dip some structure. It’s not oozy like a hot crab dip would be, and it’s a bit firmer than most regular cold crab dip recipes.

The primary gelatin brand is Knox. The gelatin comes in packets and make sure you read my instructions for how to properly use it.

You don’t taste the Gelatin, but it really is the secret ingredient in this amazing, chunky, and delicious crab dip recipe.

What Kind Of Crab Do I Use In Cold Crab Dip?

You want to use cooked crab in this easy crap appetizer recipe. Cooked crab can often be found in your grocery store’s seafood section. You’ll find it cooked and pasteurized and sealed in containers. You can find expensive jumbo or lump crab meat – don’t buy that for this recipe!

I use claw meat for this cold dip recipe. Claw meat is much more affordable, but still has plenty of big chunks.

You still need to carefully pick through the crab meat, looking for bits of shell. You don’t want to bite into that; it’ll ruin the best crab dip recipe.

Alternatively, instead of canned crabmeat, you can use canned crab meat. Most cans come in around 4-6 ounces, but the crab is packed in water and that includes water weight. You’ll need 2 cans of crab, and drain it well.

To drain canned crab, I get out my can opener and unseal the top of the can. Then, I press the lid down into the can, using the lid to press out any liquid in the crab. Push hard to remove all the liquid. You’ll also need to pick through canned crab to look for shell, but they’ll be tiny so look carefully!

How To Make This Easy Crab Dip Recipe

  1. Add 1 package of Knox unflavored gelatin to 1/4 cup of water in a medium size pot. Put the pot on the stove and turn the heat on low. Whisk the gelatin and water for a few minutes until dissolved. Do not boil this mixture. You only need enough heat to dissolve the gelatin.
  2. Add the cream cheese. Break it up with a spoon and stir it into the dissolved gelatin. You can turn the heat back on very low if your cream cheese isn’t melting easily. It should be smooth and creamy when you’re done.
  3. Add the cream of mushroom soup and mix well. I use low sodium to control the sodium in this recipe.
  4. Stir in the finely diced celery and green onion.
  5. When everything is mixed, gently fold in the drained crab. Don’t over-mix or you’ll crush up all those lovely bits of sweet crab.
  6. Pour the mixture into a serving bowl and pop it into the fridge for at least 4 hours.

Chef Jenn’s Tips

  • Buy good quality crab – it’ll make all the difference in this easy cold crab dip recipe.
  • Don’t add any salt! Between the salty cheese and salty crackers, this dip doesn’t need a single grain of salt.
  • Use both the white and green parts of the green onion but slice it thinly so you don’t get a big mouthful of onion.
  • Gelatin needs hot water to dissolve, and cold will set it.
  • This dip can be made a few days ahead of time. Once it is chilled and set, cover it with plastic wrap. But remember, it does have crab in it so eat it within a few days.
  • Garnish the crab dip with a bit of fresh dill, lemon zest, or finely chopped fresh parsley.

What To Serve with Cold Crab Dip with Cream Cheese

I love rice crackers with this dip. They are light and crisp and have a fairly neutral flavor which allows the crab to really shine.

Buttery crackers will work well – but look for those without assertive flavors. Tortilla chips are another good option.

Toasted baguette slices are another flavor-neutral choice.

To keep this dip low carb, use celery sticks and carrot sticks (or other crisp veggies) to scoop up this creamy crab dip, or pop spoonfuls onto cucumber rounds for a fun finger food presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does cold crab dip last?

Crab dip, if properly refrigerated, will keep for about 2 days. But don’t worry, you’re not likely to have leftovers and it will disappear fast!

Can I make cold crab dip with imitation crab?

I suppose you could, but spring for the real deal. It’s so much tastier! If you are using imitation crab, chop it up finely and add it just like you would regular crab.

Is this crab dip easy to make?

Yes! Once you’ve gotten the dicing of the onions and celery out of the way, it literally takes less than 10 minutes to assemble. The hardest part is waiting for it to chill and set up so you can dig in!

Cold Crab Dip Without Cream Cheese

Last Updated on 17th December 2021 by Pauline

This little appetizer is perfect for your parties or even gatherings and is very easy to make. The cold crab dip without cream cheese is the best option such that you get to make it the night before or instantly.

Whenever I have to plan parties or gatherings, I panic about what I should make as an appetizer and what I should make as a side item for chips? But when I found out about this recipe, I realized that it takes minimal effort, and you don’t have to rush for the ingredients. All you need is some crab which you can buy or also make a veggie version of crab.

The surprising part is it’s super easy to make, and its freshness is the feature that everyone likes. So, let’s dive into this article without further adieu, but first, let’s talk about one or two things that one should consider before making these fantastic dips.

Freshness

Above all things, the freshness of the crab is crucial for making this cold crab dip recipe without cream cheese. If you choose the wrong crab from the market by mistake, you can ruin the entire dish.

You need to make sure you choose the right kind, which is the best quality, and inspect the details of the crab before paying for it. One of the best ways to find the right one is to smell it. If you find the smell to be strong or stingy, then it won’t be suitable. And if it smells like a sweet ocean breeze, it is ready to be a part of the best dip!

Serve It chilled

Another thing you need to know is crab dips are the best when chilled. When you refrigerate it, it gives time for the flavor to get absorbed. You need to cool it for at least two hours before serving, or for the best result, keep it in the refrigerator for overnight. But before that, you need to cover it with plastic or in an airtight container.

Now, let’s talk about making different types of cold crab dip recipes without cream cheese.

Be it a fresh crab or canned one; you can use both to make this fantastic dip at home in just 15 minutes. It is always better if you prepare it ahead of time. You can also use the leftover crab meat to make it and the ingredients you need, which you can find in your pantry. So let’s get started!
  • ½ cup  of mayonnaise
  • ½ cup of sour cream
  • 1 cup of cooked crab meat ( best if your use fresh)
  • Sliced shallots, or you can choose green onions.
  • ½ tsp of dried dill or fresh dill
  • A tiny amount of lemon zest
  • Two teaspoons of lemon juice
  • White vinegar or white wine
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Pepper and salt to taste
  • Mince all the crab; the more you cut the crab (fresh or canned), the better it will taste. This will help the other ingredients to enter the crab.
  • Add the ingredients: sour cream, mayonnaise, sliced shallots, or green onion and combine them well. Keep aside for 5 minutes.
  • Slowly add the pepper, salt, dills (dried or fresh) to the bowl with other ingredients(including the sauce and vinegar). Add a bit of lemon zest to it.
  • Take the dip, put it in an airtight container, and keep it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours and if you want to get the burst of flavors, keep chilled overnight.
After taking it out from the fridge, your dip is ready to serve with other dishes!

  • Now take the round bread and cut it so that the bread becomes a bowl to fill with dip. Take the reaming bread and keep it aside (You can use it for the dip)

To soften cream cheese quickly, unwrap it and place it on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on 100 percent power for 15 to 20 seconds. Another way is to cut the block of cold cream cheese into small pieces and beat it with an electric mixer on high speed until it's smooth and creamy.

  • Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of finely chopped green onions.
  • Add a few tablespoons of parsley or fresh chopped cilantro or chives.
  • Double the amount of crab in the dip.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of fresh chopped dill or about 1/2 teaspoon of dried dill weed.
  • Sprinkle paprika instead of Old Bay over the top of the dip.
  • Replace the crab with imitation crab made with pollock or hake. There's usually a small amount of crabmeat in these products, so don't use them if you have an allergy to shellfish. Check the labels to be certain.
  • Add some chopped cooked shrimp and/or scallops to the dip for a seafood dip. Or make it with shrimp instead of crabmeat.
  • For an extra-special dip, make it with cooked chopped lobster.

Creamy crab dip will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to three days. While you can technically freeze crab dip, it is not recommended since freezing greatly affects the texture.

Canned lump crabmeat is real crab that has been cooked and shelled. Imitation crab, which is often sold in a shrink-wrapped package, is made largely of white fish and sometimes a small amount of crab.
