  • What is Hudson’s Seafood Restaurant?

Converted from a seafood processing plant in 1967, Hudson’s is now a dining tradition for islanders and visitors alike and is Hilton Head’s most renowned seafood restaurant. Over 90% of our seafood comes from local boats, fishing local waters so our guests eat the freshest seafood they’ve ever had.

Sitting right at the edge of Port Royal Sound, all of the tables in our waterfront restaurant feature extraordinary views for a truly special low-country dining experience. Hudson’s uses one of only two remaining local fishing fleets on Hilton Head Island to bring in fresh-caught seafood straight to our docks and to your table. Our guests often get to share the excitement as fishing crews unload thousands of fresh oysters, shrimp and soft shell crabs from each day’s catch. Bring your family and friends for a special low-country seafood feast that has been a Hilton Head Island tradition for over 50 years!

We work with fishermen based on Hilton Head Island and in Charleston, Georgia and northern Florida to ensure we get only the freshest seasonal catches such as swordfish, mahi-mahi, grouper, tilefish, triggerfish, vermilion snapper, and black sea bass. All of our fish are brought in whole, filleted in-house, and added to the daily lunch and dinner specials.

Each Spring, we have our own soft shell crab shedding operation at Hudson’s. Our shedding boxes are constructed in the packinghouse with a water circulating system to facilitate and manage the molting process. When the crabs back out of their shells, they are immediately removed and served to hungry guests. Last year we shed out and served over 2,300 soft shell crabs.

Hudson’s Seafood House On The Docks Coleslaw Recipe

Hudson’s Seven-Day Slaw

Shred:

  • 1 whole cabbage
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 green bell pepper

Bring just to a boil:

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon mustard powder
  • salt and pepper

Pour the hot liquid over the cabbage and refrigerate. It’s ready to eat when it cools.

When I make it, I leave out the bell pepper, because I just never have it around. I use whatever onions I’ve got and I add a little shredded carrots for prettiness.

Hudson’s is always a must have/must visit place. As a local, we love Hudson and how fresh their seafood always is. In season they have long wait times normally, but the wait is worth it. The views, especially on the large deck are great and you can see dolphins swimming nearby often. Great drinks and great food! We go here almost weekly of season as the wait times are much less. Highly recommended.

The of the best meals we had while in Hilton Head. Truly delicious! The service was the absolute best part. We had a server named Brian L. He took time to be patient, answer all of our questions, and go above and beyond to make our experience wonderful, especially with our daughter Landree, age 5. He suggested an amazing sandwich for my husband that he is still raving about! This spot has an incredible view, incredible food, and an amazing server I highly recommend requesting! Overall, 10 stars!

I love the location by the water and the dock. The food was delicious and the service outstanding. They had amazing fried green tomatoes. Light batter, yum. The blackened shrimp was okay (seemed a little overdone), but slaw was really tasty and tangy. My family has been coming here for decades!

Can't give Hudson's more than this for a rating. Bottom line, if you are in the mood for a wait for an outside table for dinner, be sure to make it worth the wait by ordering a steak. It wont be the best steak you ever had but it was prepared to the correct temperature. I on the other hand had the seared scallops. They were overcooked as was my wife's stuffed grouper. Our server was prompt, attentive and well informed, service was very good. Seafood could most definitely have been better. Baked potato was also on the small side and overcooked as well. My honest opinion is we won't be back, not enough value for our money and Hilton Head has lots of options for dinner.

Hudson's Collage by you.

Hudson’s is an old school, waterfront seafood restaurant that looks like thousands of others across the country. However, dismissing it as just a tourist trap would be a mistake.

During the Labor Day weekend and the second week of September, Rachel and I went on vacation to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. For the most part, the intention of this vacation was to soak up some sun, relax at the pool and the jacuzzi, read a few books, and confine our thoughts to what we’d be eating for dinner rather than racing around  and finding various activities to do. It was a decompression vacation.

Click on the “Read the rest of this entry” link below for more.

Other than fishing, golfing, playing tennis and go to the beach, that’s what you do on Hilton Head — and if you’re lucky enough to be blessed with nice sunny weather, you relax. There isn’t much else to do. Oh sure, they’ve got a bunch of tours where they take you out on the water and you can drive around observe some of the remnants of Gullah/Heechee/Low Country culture, especially if one of the festivals is going on, but other than that, it’s a resort town. What they do have a LOT of, however, is really good seafood.

Rachel and I only visited a few restaurants during our vacation stay — we cooked breakfast and lunch and a few of our dinners in the timeshare unit. But we wanted to be able to have a definitive, Hilton Head seafood experience, in particular to have some of the White Shrimp that the island and the Carolina coast is known for.

We had asked around and we got various responses of where to go get it. One of which was a really local seafood vendor that would allow us to cook it at home, which I’ll get to later. The others were recommendations of touristy-style seafood joints that you always find on coastal resort towns. One of these was Hudson’s, which is right on the water overlooking the Port Royal Sound, where parts of the movie Forrest Gump were filmed nearby.

We had attempted to go to Hudsons on the Sunday  before Labor day. That ended up being a mission abort because we had well over a 1 hour wait for a table ahead of us and the parking lot, which can accommodate several hundred cars (and shares its space with another seafood restaurant, Charley’s Crab) was completely filled up. It was a mob scene. We decided to go elsewhere and re-considered whether or not we should go back.

On our last night in Hilton Head we did go back, I guess because we really did want the authentic South Carolina, eat dinner by the water thing and eat a real Low Country Shrimp Boil as it was supposed to be prepared. I was prepared to be disappointed. As it turned out, it was the most memorable experience of the trip and we really loved the food.

Fried Green Tomatoes, served with a remoulade dipping sauce.  I liked these a lot but Rachel thought the tomatoes were actually on the ripe side and didn’t have enough acid.

Rachel decided to stick with appetizers. This is the “A little bit of everything” appetizer platter with Oysters Rockefeller, Stuffed Clam, Stuffed Mushroom Caps, Oysters wrapped in Bacon (Oysters Hudson) and Blackened Scallops. The blackened scallops were actually cooked perfectly but Rachel felt they were a bit too spicy. I liked them a lot, however.

This is Hudson’s signature ‘7-Day’ cole slaw, which is given its name due to the fact that it can last in the fridge for seven days from the absence of mayonnaise. It’s a very sweet slaw.

This is an order of “Boiled Pinky” which is typically referred to as Low Country Shrimp boil, seasoned with boil spices and cooked with sausage and corn. This is a full order but I thought it was more appropriate as an appetizer.

We loved the shrimp so much that we got another order, but just the boiled shrimp, which you can get without corn and sausage.

And for dessert, peanut butter pie. Very rich, very satisfying, and enough to share.
